Own fault for having an emo mom ^^
But I agree, drop stealing is kinda lame, especially in a die/not ressed scenario... the sort of thing you expect a 4-year-old to do when stealing cookies. But that's people for you... making all people nice and kind and considerate would require:
a) Jezus
b) That I die
c) Free pizza, tacos and Coca Cola
d) Two or all of the above

happened to me i did deep in hm once and i got only 1 drop from the chest i was wondering where was the other one untill i died and someone said
"hay your green drop"
i didn't see it because of all the green player names around me
most left one healers boon monk stayed to get my green
and he probably had res chant but didn't res me
i left cause i didn't want to watch him i was disguisted
at least the green was the hammer
that's why i always try to be polite and fair
i don't want to be one of them
especially in deep i often picked up other people's expired drop and give it to them when we get out of the 4 rooms cause i am afraid someone else will pick them and not give them back

I would never wait 10mins just to get a dead persons drop, that is just very pathetic.

Well, it's not like it is anything particularly hard to do or that requires any considerable effort to accomplish.

You're probably alone there then.... or else obscenely rich.
I'd sooner spend 10 minutes doing nothing and get a gold for it than spend half an hour farming for that same gold.
I might have a code of honour, so to speak... but I certainly don't have any semblence of dignity.

Personally I'd pick up the items, and I'd PM the person who got the drops that I'm holding them for them and to let me know when they're back so I can give them to them. It prevents others from stealing them and ensures they still get them if they don't make it back to the computer. Hell, I've offered drops to people who are getting crappy ones. I'd much rather do that and feel good than feel like I made some in-game gold or whatever off someone.
Then again, I'm not exactly normal. :P I do think the policy of picking them up and giving them back if asked is pretty fair, I just prefer to proactively offer them back rather than have someone come around yelling later "WY U STEEL MY DRPS?!?!" Then I'd have to tell them "speak something resembling actual language and not in all caps; then I'll consider giving you the goods."
Heh I figured that his mom was cutting veggies or something and caught herself with the knife. Now I feel silly, of course she must be emo! Then again, if someone was stealing my kid's drops, I'd probably be emo too.

And even if I was rich as hell, I would still wait (dependant on it being something I actually WANTED; I don't wait for merch-fodder).
But then we disagree about most things, don't we?
And you're the one with the power to impose your opinion.
Regardless.... many MANY people will actually wait for such things, irrespective of whether you would or not.
I'm one of those who would give back the item to the original owner if they asked for it; many would not.

I don't see why people would wait for a drop that isn't theirs, unless they're full of douchebaggery.

We only disagree because you care enough to whine about everything. I on the other hand couldn't give a toss, and could easily ditch everything I have with no thought spared.
Fair play on giving items back though, many wouldn't. I have been in pugs where people rage quit because someone stole their drop.

You are misinterpreting.
Of course one would expect him to go handle a real world crisis. Which is largely why we would also expect that (s)he would not return.
If you're going to go afk in a PUG / mission - it's either because you got disconnected or something important came up that you could not have reasonably expected before joining in.
I would expect in such a situation that you would handle that something else, and not return. And after 5 minutes, I'd be sure of it, so I wouldn't see the problem in assuming you were not coming back.
And once we have a logical assumption that you aren't returning, might as well divy up the drops and move on. Maybe, if we know you, we could hand them to you later on. But if we don't, then we're just going to have to work off of logical assumptions.
That the OP did return in this case is the exception, not the norm around which we should plan.
Besides, the fact that (s)he did return is not something to admire in this case, given why (s)he went away - (s)he should have stayed offline / away and taken care of family business.

I of course have a very different opinion of the people who leave your toon dead and still connected, and wait out a timer.
If you're around, if you haven't gone afk, then it is loot stealing, and there's no excuse for that.

it's not stealing if it's not assigned to anyone. you may be annoyed that the items were at one time assigned to you but no longer.
personally, i have better things to do with my time than wait around for 10 minutes just to get a gold drop.

I'm sure glad I don't know you.
Actually it's worse when someone won't rez you and takes your stuff.
However, the OP's circumstances were unusual and to be so discourteous -- just goes to show how wretched the person probably is in RL

any drops on the ground that are not assigned to a player, are free game. pretty simple.
If you have not seen it drop, didn't care, taking a crap, attending to a personal crisis, doing something else in the game that you consider to be much more important than the gold/green drop that you are now complaining about because it is now so important to you....
you don't get the drop...the loot stalker does. And he doesn't have to PM you or hunt you down or wait for you or hope you'll forgive him.
(i still think loot stalkers are losers but they are within their right to take anything the game mechanics will allow them...outside of scamming)
